Rico Saenz to Transfer from MSU to SMC
Rico Saenz of Bloomfield Hills will transfer from Michigan State University to wrestle for SMC Coach Todd Hesson and the Roadrunners.
Saenz is a two-time district and regional champion, a three-time state qualifier and placer, a state champion and placed 6th in the MSU Open last season. He joins Cameron Savage of Davison, Aidan Diaz of Crown Point, Indiana, Nate Carter of Clarkston, Preston Hammond of New Prairie, Indiana, Darius Ambs of Mason and Theodore (TJ) Mitchell of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, as new Roadrunner wrestlers this season.
Hesson said, "Rico is a very experienced wrestler, both in high school and college. He has spent a year in a D1 wrestling program and placed 6th at the MSU open. He thinks outside the box and will provide solid leadership in our room!"
In 2025-2026, the Roadrunners won the MCCAA Conference championship for the fourth straight season and qualified the maximum ten wrestlers for the national meet. SMC finished the season at #17 in NJCAA Division 1 and sophomores Santana Ramon and Kaden Lapaugh were named All-Americans.
In April, SMC dedicated its new wrestling facility, which has quadrupled the space available the men's and women's teams from 2,688 square feet to an impressive 11,195 square feet, doubled the mat capacity, added a dedicated fitness and warm-up area, created offices for the wrestling coaches, added locker rooms for student-athletes and expanded the restroom facilities.
