WBB Splits the Week
SMC Women's Basketball went 1-1 in Chicago last week, suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of the Olive Harvey Purple Panthers on Wednesday, 73-86. The Roadrunners were down three at the end of Q1, used a strong second quarter to pull ahead 45-39 at the break, but the Panthers came out on a 12-0 run in the second half and despite SMC tying the game at several points, the home team pulled away in the fourth quarter. SMC gave away a lot of possessions in the contest, committing a school-high 31 turnovers in the game.
On Wednesday, SMC was led by freshman Rayvan Rush with 23 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists, turning the ball over eight times. Freshman Morganne Postell had 21 points off the bench with four steals, and freshmen Maggie Weller and Livy Robinson each added seven points.
After a few days of practice, the Roadrunners headed back to the South Side and beat the Bulldogs of South Suburban, 57-48 this afternoon. The Roadrunners led by five after Q1, then used an offensive push to go up by 12 at the half. South Suburban won Q3, but SMC kept at it and won by nine, with fewer turnovers and more balanced scoring. Rush again led with 14 points, Weller had 13, and freshman Shiyah Forte added 10.
