Women's Hoops Adds Two Road Wins This Week

The SMC women's basketball team earned two conference road wins at Lake Michigan College and at Lansing Community College, finishing their regular season at 18-8 and 8-4 in the MCCAA Western Conference.

On Tuesday at LMC, the Roadrunners took no prisoners and the squad in black knocked out the home team early. SMC led by 11 after Q1, by 20 at half, and by 32 at the end of Q3 before clearing the bench and winning 59-35. The defense held the Red Hawks to just 6 points in each of the first three quarters. Cameron Thomas led the Roadrunners with 21 points and 7 rebounds, Naenae Kirkland added 12 points and 6 rebounds, Kam Patterson had 7 assists and 5 rebounds, Macey Laubach poured in 8 points with 2 rebounds and 2 steals, and Tori Eldridge finished with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Then on Thursday at Lansing, the shots weren't falling for the SMC women in the first half, but the old adage "Defense Travels" held true again. The Roadrunners clamped down in the second half and held Lansing to just 10 points in Q3 and 11 points in Q4 while scoring a bunch in the paint and at the stripe to win 64-54. Macey Laubach led the Roadrunners with 22 and was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line, Tori Eldridge added 11, Cameron Thomas poured in 10 and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Ariana Lemons went for 9 points and 7 rebounds.

SMC finishes the regular season 18-8 and 8-4 in the Western Conference, an incredible feat for a first-year program of all first-year players. This team can win any number of ways and should be exciting to watch in the tournament, which begins Tuesday, March 7.
