Women's Basketball Adds 3 Wins This Week

The SMC women's basketball team had a packed week with three games in four days, and they won all of them.

On Wednesday, the Roadrunners earned that most valuable of W's: a conference road victory! They took a six-point lead at halftime and closed out the Kellogg Bruins at the Miller Building Gym in the final minute with a rebound and put back with the game on the line. Macey Laubach led the Roadrunners with 14 points. Cameron Thomas contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ariana Lemons added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Tori Eldridge poured in six with eight rebounds. Off the bench, Khashya McCoy had six points, Nae Nae Kirkland had three, and Charlee Balcom drained one from behind the arc.

On Friday, they hosted the Great Lakes Christian Crusaders in a contest rescheduled from November 16 and shook off a sluggish start to win 64-56. SMC found themselves down 7 in the first quarter, but were able to amp up the defensive intensity and take a one-point lead at halftime. The second half was back and forth, but some timely stops and long jumpers gave the home team their 10th win on the season. Cameron Thomas fought through some aggressive defense and led the scoring with 18, and Macey Laubach, playing 38 minutes in the contest, added 17. Tori Eldridge put down a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, making both of her 3-point attempts. Khashya McCoy and Naenae Kirkland had six and five points off the bench, respectively.

Then on Saturday, as part of a doubleheader against the Grace Christian University Tigers, the Roadrunners used a gutsy defensive effort and hustle under the boards to win 73-60. After taking a 21-10 first quarter lead, the Roadrunners gave up a 10-0 run to the Tigers, but found their footing and took a seven-point margin into the locker room. SMC never really looked back after that, up 59-40 after three and finishing with a 13-point victory in a very physical contest against a couple seniors.Cameron Thomas put down 26 to go with her 12 rebounds, and Kam Patterson shot 4-5 from behind the arc to add 14. Macey Laubach scored a tough 11, Ariana Lemons had 10 and Naenae Kirkland had 5 off the bench.

The Roadrunners (now 11-5) next head to KVCC for another conference road game on Wednesday, January 25.
