Men's Basketball 1-1 Last Week

SMC Men's Basketball was .500 last week in a pair of contests at the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse, beating Andrews on Tuesday but then falling to Muskegon on Saturday.

The home win over the Andrews Cardinals was 68-54 as SMC jumped out to an 8-0 lead and were up nine early with the score 13-4. But basketball is a game of runs and the Cardinals charged back to tie the score at 13. SMC then went on their own spree and were up 10 with 2 minutes left in the first half, heading into the break up 35-28. It was back and forth in the second stanza, and Andrews worked to cut the lead to two points, but never got closer as the Roadrunners buckled down and then pulled away to win by 14.

SMC was led by sophomore Aries Hull, who is double-doubling on the regular this season; he had 18 points and 13 rebounds vs. the Cardinals. Freshman Davion Goins also dub-dubbed with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Mark Williams dropped in another 12. Freshman Damontae May got close to his own double-double with eight points and nine assists. For the Cardinals, former Roadrunner Mari Nichols led all scorers with 24 against his former team.

On Saturday, it was a tale of two halves in the 57-62 loss to the Muskegon Jayhawks. The Roadrunners started off the scoring and were up as many as 12 in the first half before heading to the locker room up 9.

But the second half was a different story and Muskegon charged back to tie the game at 44. The Jayhawks scored the next four points and never trailed again in a physical, emotional contest. SMC was again led by Hull with 21 points and 11 rebounds, going 12 of 13 from the free throw line. Goins added 16 points and sophmore RJ Davis poured in 11.

The Roadrunners slip to 5-3 on the season and next host CBG Prep at 7pm on Wednesday, 11/27.
