Men's Basketball Wins Both at Roadrunner Classic

SMC Men's Basketball started the 2024-25 campaign with two wins at the second annual Roadrunner Classic, held in the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday.

The Roadrunners needed to go to overtime to beat the Andrews University Cardinals, but got the job done 59-57 in their season opener and Game 1 of the Roadrunner Classic. Andrews didn't score their first points until 16:30 left in the first half, but SMC struggled at the offensive end and were down a point at the break. SMC found itself down four in the second half as the open looks from long range just would not fall. The Green and Gold were able to get a run and go up by five, but then got cold again and let Andrews tie it at 51 on free throws with 6.2 seconds left. The extra period - the first overtime for SMC men or women since 1997 - was back and forth, but the Roadrunners got a stop when they needed it to secure the victory.

The home team was led by freshman Davion Goins with 13 points, sophomore Prince Adams had 12 with 16 rebounds for his first double-double of the year, and freshman Antwan "Chick" Callhan added 12 off the bench.

On Saturday, SMC found themselves down double digits in the first half, but made some adjustments, moved the ball inside and got back to 26-32 by the break. The Green and Gold kept playing consistent basketball and turned up their defensive ferocity to take the lead 38-36 at the 15:14 mark, then steadily increased the lead for a 68-51 victory.

The Roadrunners were led by sophomore Rodell Davis, Jr., who was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe and put in 17 points total, Adams had 14 points (8-of-8 from the line) and 11 rebounds for a second double-double in as many games and Callahan added 10. Adams also contributed six blocks, two steals and an assist on the day.

SMC is now 2-0 on the young season and head to Chicago on Wednesday, 11/6, to face the Olive Harvey Purple Panthers.
