Men's Hoops Adds Two Wins This Week

The SMC men's basketball team grabbed two conference wins on the road this week, punching their ticket to the Great Lakes District A Tournament.

At LMC on Tuesday, the Roadrunners came back from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat the Red Hawks in Benton Harbor 62-60. The battle came down to the wire as both teams hit 3-pointers with under 30 seconds to go, but the Roadrunners wound up on top as LMC missed a chance at the foul line with four ticks left. The rowdy SMC fans in attendance stormed the court to celebrate the road win.

In the game, Sean Burress led SMC with 18 points and Mari Nichols added 12 with 7 rebounds. Mark Williams had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Rashawn Bost, Mikel Forrest and Stewart Smith each put in 7 points.

At Lansing, SMC rested some starters at Lansing but still got the road conference W by the score of 75-74. The last minute on the clock took about 20 in real time as the combination of free throws and timeouts slowed the game, but the Roadrunners handled the pressure and came out on top. Mari Nichols had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Sean Burress added 22 more points. Nate Goins had 12 off the bench and Rashawn Bost put in 11.

SMC (15-10 and 6-6) takes a two-game winning streak into the Great Lakes District Tournament, which begins Tuesday, March 7.
