Men's Basketball Splits the Week at 1-1

Men's Basketball Splits the Week at 1-1

The SMC men's basketball team lost a see-saw affair to CBG Prep on Wednesday evening, then beat the Muskegon Jayhawks on Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday's tilt was a game of runs, and the Roadrunners came up a bit short as time ran out against CBG Prep. The men's team fell behind 13-3, but steadily came back and took a 2-point lead at the very end of the first half. SMC was able to build that lead to 14 points, but then CBG went on a run to close the gap and eventually earn a 5-point win. Scoring for the Roadrunners was spread among the players, with Mari Nichols putting in 19, Mark Williams with 15, Rashawn Bost with 11, Sean Burress with 10 and A.J. Williams with 10 off the bench.

The Muskegon Jayhawks visited the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Roadrunners led by a point at halftime, then fell behind by six midway through the second half. Clamping down on defense and amping up the rebounding sparked the turnaround as the Jayhawks suddenly went cold from the field, and SMC earned a 63-49 victory. Sean Burress led the Roadrunners with 16 points and Mari Nichols added 14.

SMC, now 6-2, get a shot on Tuesday at the #1 team in the country and defending NJCAA D2 national champions as they travel to Chicago to face South Suburban.
